An effort is being made by the fantastic nwn community to provide an alternative to the GameSpy service.
The alternative service is already partly running. See the bioware forum post here:

As I understand it, this is how it works: You need to download and run a game patch which then updates your game files so that they access the alternative web site instead of trying to access GameSpy.
The patch is applied to both your game and the standalone server which comes with the game.
I'm still a little vague on the exact details but if the patch works the way I believe it does, the result will be a transparent fix for the problem of GS dropping nwn.
The patch seems to be designed to work with both nwn1 and nwn2. Windows is supported with Linux support being worked on.
Update: I have investigated further and here is some more information.
The new server is still undergoing development and is not functional as at the time of this writing, but I expect that will soon change based on the enthusiasm with which the problem is being approached by the people involved.
If you have a hex editor such as XVI32 and the confidence and technical expertise, you can modify your nwn files to point to the new server.
You need to edit both nwmain.exe and nwserver.exe
Search for the string master.gamespy.com and replace (overwrite, not insert) with the string master.nwncore.net
Each string should only appear once in each exe file.
As stated earlier, this site is still under development so don't expect an immediate result. I suggest if you do this for your server, you should contact the site developers to let them know, so they can use the information to help them test their site.
